Part national park, part UNESCO World Heritage site, the Pantanal is the world’s largest tropical wetland, covering over 70,000 square miles—an area the size of Washington State—in the smack-dab center of South America.
Brazil can lay claim to most of the region, but, as nature recognizes no political boundaries, the Pantanal spills into neighboring Paraguay and Bolivia. And though it’s often overshadowed by the Amazon rain forest to the north, the Pantanal quietly boasts the highest concentration of wildlife on the continent.
Life in the Pantanal follows the ebb and flow of an epic ecosystem that pulses with the seasons like a beating heart. Each day brings a new landscape—a river rises, a pool disappears, and the circle of life continues in an unending loop.

Colourful birds are in abundance here, including the iconic white jabiru stork with its black and red neck, as well as red, blue and hyacinth macaws. There are also plenty of square nosed capybaras and caimans around. For the rest of the wildlife, it’s all about being at the right place at the right time.
There are plenty of things to do and it all depends on whether you are up for it. Most pousadas and fazendas (ranches) offer kayaking, boat trips, piranha fishing (using beef bait), horse riding and night safaris.
Pick-up at the airport and immediate transfer to the traditional town of Poconé with introduction to the geological formation and flora characteristics, then to the lodge, arriving there after a brief safari along the Transpantaneira park-road with many stops to observe its rich fauna.
After dinner, hop on to a thrilling night safari – a night-time drive using a vehicle equipped with a flashlight for highlighting nocturnal fauna, with the chance to observe crab-eating foxes, ocelots, and many caiman’s eyes!
(Overnight at Pantanal)
After breakfast, set out on a hike through one of the many mound-hills, which attracts a lot of mammals among many birds nests. In the afternoon, enjoy a horse ride through the flooding fields. The horse is the most versatile means of transportation, allowing both the crossing of the flood plain and access to the distant forests. The ‘Pantaneiro’ horse is extremely docile. Other animals are so used to it that they don’t perceive the rider on the horse.
Come back for an overnight stay.
